Citizens use information on candidate performance to vote—rewarding high performers and punishing low performers. Citizens’ decision to vote is not affected by the ethnic background of the candidate when performance information is available. Information on candidate performance compared to benchmarks is useful to citizens for activities unfamiliar to them. Responses from citizens differ before and after the election when assessing performance compared to benchmarks.
